Tape of the week #39 Been a bit tardy with the 'we Tape of the week #39
Been a bit tardy with the 'weekly' posts again lately. Been planning to post this one for a few weeks now. A recent purchase and I had to steel myself to open the packaging, as it is always lovely getting a sealed tape, and always a shame to break the seal.

The latest selection is my new copy of New York Dolls Live in NYC 1975. Their last live show in that city. The tracks are the album Red Patent Leather (6 tracks new at the time, which never made it to being a 3rd Dolls album) plus a few other live tracks recorded in NYC and Paris. Not the greatest sound quality, but it's a rip-roaring ride of scuzzy rock and roll and I love it.

Hard to choose a favourite track, as there are some great, loud versions of classics like Chatterbox. But I'll go with Pills for the Bo Diddley connection. A great version.

Tape of the week #38 'Revelations' is the third st Tape of the week #38
'Revelations' is the third studio album by post-punk band Killing Joke, released in 1982. It was recorded in Cologne and produced by Conny Plank. It was their last album to featured the original line-up, until 2010's Absolute Dissent. Around this time Jaz Coleman disappeared off to Iceland to avoid what he thought was an impending nuclear holocaust. And apparently one of the reasons Youth left the band was that he felt this album came out "a bit dirgy".

I absolutely love the sound of this album, and it is probably my favourite of theirs. For me it strikes the balance between heaviness and something more ethereal. Most typically on 'Chop Chop' and 'We Have Joy'.

As it's the first track I heard from this album (and possibly the first KJ track I ever heard), my standout track from this immense album is 'Chop Chop', although 'Empire Song' deserves an honourable mention too.

Tape of the week #37. Have again been a little la Tape of the week #37.

Have again been a little lax getting these posted recently. This week (fortnight?)'s Tape of the Week is The Rolling Stones – Some Girls. Aside from that fact that - IMO - Miss You is one of the Stones' finest moments, I chose this also for the interesting packaging. Hence TWO photos this time. The tape features and articulated cardboard sleeve around the OUTSIDE of the cassette case. The sleeve features the album artwork on front AND back. A nice touch. As far as I know, this is the original UK release from 1978.

Tape of the week #36 This week's featured cassett Tape of the week #36

This week's featured cassette is Walter (Wendy) Carlos' original score for A Clockwork Orange. I knew bits of this before I got hold of this tape, but didn't realise how ahead of it's time this really was. The album contains previously unreleased and complete tracks from her score to Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange that had been cut or omitted from the official soundtrack. The whole thing is an amazing piece of electronic music, and the influence on artists like Human League (especially their earliest incarnation as The Future) and Cabaret Voltaire is obvious. And apparently, among the instruments Carlos used for the score was a "spectrum follower", a prototype of a vocoder that converted the human voice into electronic signals that mirror the original note that has been played.

An astounding piece of work that sounds great on tape.

Tape of the week #35 Not done one of these for a Tape of the week #35

Not done one of these for a couple of weeks, for various reasons. This week's tape is the compilation of early-ish tracks by The Fall ‎– In: Palace Of Swords Reversed. Very few of the early albums by The Fall are available on cassette, so this is a good overview of their work on Rough Trade from the early eighties. As The Fall are my favourite group / band, it's hard to choose one track from this excellent selection, but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Neighbourhood Of Infinity. Not least for the lyric, "I used to have this thing about Link Wray / I used to play him every Saturday", but also THAT riff.

Tape of the week #34 This (and last) week's tape Tape of the week #34

This (and last) week's tape is another Eighties classic - Japan's Gentlemen Take Polaroids. I am relatively new to this album, considering I grew up with Tin Drum, which I always considered my favourite. This a lovely stepping stone from Quiet Life (which I also love) to Tin Drum, and I love the atmosphere of this throughout. It also happens to feature Ryuichi Sakamoto.

You can't go far wrong with the title track, in my opinion, but the whole album swings so smoothly.

Associates - Sulk (U.S. Version / U.K. Version). As mentioned recently, I love these double play tapes. This one includes the U.S and U.K. versions of the album. I don't play this album as much as I should, as it's an absolute classic and Billy MacKenzie's is so unique.

Despite featuring hits Club Country and Party Fears Two, my favourite track on here has always been White Car In Germany for its off-kilter atmosphere and haunting sound.

Tape of the week #32…is Laugh? I Nearly Bought O Tape of the week #32...is Laugh? I Nearly Bought One!, a compilation by post-punk disco noise-makers, Killing Joke.

I love this band for everything they did up to and including Revelations, but their stuff seems hard to come by on cassette. And this compilation is a good summary of their best bits up to (and slightly after) that album.

If I had to choose a favourite track, it would be the unique sound of Chop Chop. I remember it knocked me sideways when I first heard it on the radio. It was so dark and heavy, yet joyously noisy and to me is the band at the peak of their powers. And that rhythm section!

I love these double tapes (ones with a full album on each side). Less turning over the tape and also usually a budget option to get two great albums.

In this case definitely two great albums, in the shape of the first two by The Specials. If I had to choose, it would be 'More' as my favourite for Dammers' mix of styles from ska to lounge to dub. Favourite track? Had to be the oddly-edited Stereotypes/Stereotypes Pt. 2.

Tape of the week #30 A bit slow posting this this Tape of the week #30

A bit slow posting this this week.

A Trip to Marineville is the debut studio album by English art punk band Swell Maps. It was originally released in June 1979.

I have had it on vinyl (minus the additional 7” single that originally came with it) for many years. Great to now have this on tape too.

Favourite track is probably the short sharp shock of Vertical Slum.

Tape of the week #29 Following the sad passing of Tape of the week #29

Following the sad passing of Chris Bailey, this week's selection had to be my copy of The Saints' debut, punk classic (I'm) Stranded.

While I love the energy and noise of the title track, my favourite here has to be their cover of Wild About You, which helped introduce me to the world of The Missing Links.

One of the best debut albums ever made.

Tape of the week #28 This weeks’ selection is Tape of the week #28

This weeks’ selection is The Birthday Party – Hits. Have been after this for a while, and finally found a copy. At the risk of sounding all Alan Partridge, this is a great retrospective of the band's career, spanning from their beginnings as The Boys Next Door to the last knockings with Blixa Bargeld on guitar, a Bad Seeds precursor.

I am not a fan of Nick Cave's solo work at all, but these songs are so powerful. And that bass - Tracy Pew has to be up there as one of the best-in-bass-class.

Favourite track is hard to choose, but Swampland just about edges it for THAT bass and the neat distilation of everything Nick Cave was about lyrically and vocally for quite a while afterwards.

Tape of the week #27 This week's selection is Wire Tape of the week #27
This week's selection is Wire's second album, Chairs Missing. I have loved this album for as long as I can remember for its other-worldly, mysterious take on punk. I'd describe it as an ambient punk album with some beautiful, angular melodies.

I love every track, but have always had a soft spot for the slow build of Heartbeat.

Tape of the week #26 This week's selection is Aut Tape of the week #26

This week's selection is Author! Author!, the one and only album by Scottish post-punk band Scars. More pop infused than their first single, Horrorshow / Adult/ery, it's a great document of the post-punk sound at that time, particularly in Scotland. If you haven't seen it, the video for the single from this album, All About You, is well worth checking out. And the cassette contains '2 tracks extra', in the shape of a cover of David Essex's Silver Dream Machine and She's Alive.

Tape of the week #25 Is My Life in the Bush of Gho Tape of the week #25
Is My Life in the Bush of Ghosts by Brian Eno and David Byrne. Released in February 1981, the album integrates sampled vocals and found sounds, African and Middle Eastern rhythms, and electronic music. Apparently, Hank Shocklee of the Bomb Squad cited the album as an influence on the Bomb Squad's sample-driven production work for the group Public Enemy.

For the 1981 second edition, the track "Qu'ran" was removed at the request of the Islamic Council of Great Britain. In its place "Very, Very Hungry" (length: 3:21), previously released as the B-side of "The Jezebel Spirit" 12" single, was substituted. Tnis version has the latter track in place of Qu'ran.

I've always really liked Help Me Somebody, so will pick that as my favourute track, but really the whole thing should be listened to as one piece of work.
