The title is self explanatory, the auto destructive art in a recording, an endless search for a sound, in an ever-changing interconnection, as circuits and wires melt, new pathways are found. Made using no external sources, a conscious crosstalk layering; so interactions of sound are both by chance, as previous layers can’t be heard in record mode, and close deep listening of the actively made sound, an improvisation in a sense.
Swan Song for Tape Recorder is a 15 track album, recorded in 1997 with a rather battered and broken double tape machine, bought from someone in the street for £10. It had a 4 slider graphic and bass /stereo separation/switching. By fusing and feeding it back on itself, internally and externally, using metal objects (coins, washers) and wire, making a layered distortion by removing the erase head, and detaching the record-head to make it malleable to various positional adaptions effecting the stereo panning.

Shaun Robert has been recording and making music since the age of 8 using tape machines by utilising the pause button, crash editing sounds together. This was not seen as form of art, more of a way to understand and adapt the world around him. Using a catalogue of pseudonyms to do various projects including factor X and Institute for Alien Research, these creative outings became more and more like imaginary friends, colouring things with a rainbow of the mind’s eye.
